This is a proof of concept ad for the new campaign to promote Do Good, a really cool tool on B.com which allows the user to find an organization they with to donate their time, talents or money to.

The creative brief I received from Marketing stated that for this second Do Good campaign (after their initial "introduction" campaign), our strategy is to show users all of the diverse and unusual ways that they can share their own unique talents with a charitable organization of their choice.

This is the overall concept that I came up with for them. (I also wrote the copy in this iteration though it will likely change.) I have a few other visual concepts within this template as well that I will execute for the campaign. This is a print and web ad campaign.

I wish I knew how to make the vector painting in Flash transition evenly from transparent to opaque. I get the "scribble" effect insted of a flat transition. I need to find out how to fix this.

This is for a new client. They are relying on us for concept/ideas as well as execution, for their upcoming ads promotional campaigns for the next year. It's a big deal and a big buy and it's something we can have fun with and stretch out a bit with.

My own personal challenge is to come up with a concept and execution for whatever "Spring Break" promotion they'll have this year (TBA). This is the idea/copy/concept I came up with . This is a roughed out Photoshop sketch, but I'm going to execute this sliding billboard in Flash, do all the illo in Flash and, obviously, the animation in Flash. (I'm sitting here with a copy of the book "How to Cheat in Flash" and wishing I could download it into my brain, but alas we are not technologically there yet are we... ;) )

I designed an ad for the new Boston.com White Pages. Here was the first pass. This color scheme got nixed, which I think was a good idea. Given the ad's subject matter, it looks a bit goth-stalker. Here is a friendlier version of the same ad.

Boston Traveler (redesign) & Deals of the Month (new product)

New Boston Traveler redesign. Approved.

The Boston Traveler email is a tried and true Boston.com email product. It's was in need of a redesign, so here is the new design. This is approved and will be launched.

The second part of this is an offshoot of the BT email - - a new monthly email under the Boston Traveler umbrella, for Deals of the Month.

This one is most recent and is currently being submitted for approval.

This one was a little tricky - the name was not set, and I originally did a design using "Last Minute Deals" using a time/clock motif.

This was the first version with the former "Last Minute Deals" title

This title changed at the last minute (appropriately enough) and has been renamed "Deals of the Month". Shoe-horning in a calendar motif didn't work (usually shoe-horning anything into an already-set motif doesn't work ;) )

Blech.... Scope creep!

so I reworked the Globe and background a bit to give a different flavor. The sun and moon are indicative of "month" in a more passive way, but I think that's all we need in the end.

Holiday Magic was a success...

Holiday Magic homepage take-over went live on Thursday, November 8, 2007. The big ad shown in the above screenshot was a "sliding billboard" - it expanded for about 10 seconds and pushed the contents of the web page below it down, then it scrolled back up and out of sight.

The animation featured softly blinking holiday lights, and siz advertiser logos. :)
The click-through was a jump pae with expanded advertiser promotional copy and information.

The two marquee ads on top right and left feature a static button which allowed viewers to "replay" the animation.

1 - Double marquees. (Static ads - though built in Flash, no animation was allowed.) The thin purple strip 'button' on bottom of the marquee allows for replay of the sliding billboard animation.

2 - the sliding billboard.

3-Two stacked "headline" ads (234 x 60) the messaging on these could be the exact same or could be a connecting message, as shown in the above screenshot.

4-Big ad (336 x 280)

There were six advertisers whose ads would auto refresh onto the home page. The campaign was considered a "takeover" because, though there were six advertisers, at any refresh, all ads from only one of the advertisers would be present at any one time. So the ohmepage would feature the billboard with six advertisers all of the time, but the other ad units would only feature one of the advertisers at any one page refresh.

Steph's Good - Bye Card

Here is the "Farewell Steph" card that I designed. This is a template for the design and how it was constructed. I am hoping Steph will send a photo of the finished card (I did not have a chance to photograph it before we gave it to her). Holiday Magic mock

This will consist of a home page "takeover" involving six advertisers. The main event will be a push-down billboard ad (which is 300 pixels deep and will push the contents of the main content well down for a specified amount of seconds, then closes back up and the content goes back to its original place.)

The ad package will consist of placement int he billboard ad, a takeover of all homepage ad unites per advertiser (changing on refresh) so six takeovers in all, rotating, and a click-through advertisement page featuring detailed information on each advertisers' promotion, plus more cute graphics. Hope you enjoy!

These are both based on a specific print ad that the client likes and requested that the new BWT site stylistically borrow from.
The print ad doesn't have any of the texture (or color, except for golden yellow/orange) I've injected into these, but it does have a stark black, design-y look. I'm hoping for a happy medium. I tried to warm up the stark black style with the some warm neutral tones and texture in the first one - the beigey design, which I like the best. But, I did do an additional 'gold' design as well, to appease client because it is closer to the original 'inspiration' that the client asked for than the beigey one.

Here is a redesign I did for a Boston.com email product, TicketWatch. I designed the previous (first) version of it too, and, full dislosure, I was never nuts about it (and that's being kind). It was a victim of too much work on too tight a deadline and, at the time, being creatively spent or otherwise lacking in inspiration. I remember when I was working on it, and I remember the feeling of having no strong creative direction for it. Kind of defeated, and then: the deadline. So, I delivered it, and it worked... got approved, and has been in active use for a couple of years. But it was never something I was hugely proud of. And, well, that's no fun.

So I am very happy (doing happy dance) to be redesigning it (yipee!). Click on the header to see a mock of how it will be utilized. The ad used within the shell is just a placeholder for whatever ad is sold into the TicketWatch product on a given week.

This design accomplishes everything I set out for it. I wanted it to have a classic old-timey (40's style) theater feel, "authentic", classic, a little crusty and rusty, like an old movie house. I also wanted to add a touch of whimsy, to keep it out of Gothic territory and to keep universal appeal. For ancillary graphical elements, I had the idea to add a Fez hat, or an usher's hat - maybe have one of those atop one of the letters, askew as if the letter was wearing the hat in a tipped fashion. But, the popcorn won out for this first mock. The popcorn's cute.

I also wanted to see what the entire design would look like in shades of blue and black - kind of going a film-noir-type route with it - David Lynch, but 40's! But, I wanted to send this one out first and I didn't tackle that version today. It was a bit more involved than I had time for.

I'm really happy with it as a first pass! We'll see how it progresses.

Ad Concept for 2 MM users campaign

We will be doing a B-2-B online and print campaign touting our abundance of users and that we provide great quality for your advertising dollar.

I came up with this concept (which was molded around pre-existing copy).

ETA (07/20/07):
The concept went over very well - hurray!! But, the general consensus was that it would be better utilized for a B -2-C campaign as opposed to B-2-B (and I agree with that). So this concept is officially in the 'back pocket' for another day... ;)

Second in the Events series

I did the ball illo and animation, Gene did all the rest (the text and the putting together the rest of the elements in the finished ad). This one took me a lot less time than the previous one (with several mini-animations). Flash was behaving. :)

Boston.compilation CD Cover Art

This is a CD cover design I created for a compilation CD which is going to be distributed internally to employees of Boston.com as a post-holiday gift. The employees were asked to submit a song of their choice for the compilation, and the first 40 songs collected made it on to the 2 -CD set.
The design is pretty much approved, but there will be another version of the cover design with a different color theme ( 2 CD's - Volume One and Volume Two) as well as two coordinating back-cover playlists, which I have yet to do. So, more to come.

I wanted to do something fun and kid-like (remembering the Donny & Marie record players popular in the 70's) but adding in a little "indie" flavor and a touch of attitude, since we have a lot of young upstarts here at B.com who are real music aficionados and have the inside track on whats up and coming! The CD cover design also reflects the "vinyl" theme which the Marketing folks requested after purchasing CD's for this project that look like record albums.
